Global Stone sponsor entrants in the Ideal Young Gardeners of the Year Competition 2015

Global Stone are delighted to be sponsoring Writtle College at this year’s Ideal Home Show. Students from the college are competing in the Ideal Young Gardeners of the Yearcompetition against another five of the UK’s top horticultural colleges.

Organised by TV Gardener David Domoney this annual award, in association with the Prince’s Foundation, is now in its fifth year. The award celebrates young green talent by challenging UK’s leading horticultural colleges to design and build show gardens in just a few days. The theme is on sustainability and tranquillity in urban spaces, with a particular focus on making the best use of excess rainwater within the designs.

The finished gardens will be judged by experts from across the gardening industry and there is also a People’s Choice Award which will be presented to the winning college at the end of the show on 6 April. So if you are visiting don’t forget to visit and vote.

We were pleased to be able to visit Writtle College and meet with lecturers Ben Wincott and Simon Watkins who have been guiding the students on this project. We were able to see the students working on the build of the garden and, even in the early stages, it looks to be an innovative and exciting design. The design focuses on a garden for a city urban space where there is high pollution. So instead of growing foodstuff they are creating a green space that reduces our dependence on mains water and helps to clean the air.

The garden has a woodland feel with clean lines and slick materials including beautiful Global Stone paving, as well as sustainable sourced wood. The space is lit with low-energy feature lighting and allows for the harvesting of rainwater into an underground tank which flows through a rainforest-style shower ready to be fed back to the plants. The water features also create a soothing sound that blocks out the city noise.

We wish all the students and Ben and Simon at Writtle College good luck!
