Global Stone Gives WW2 Veteran A New Lease Of Life On Love Your Garden
Apr 13, 2023
WW2 veteran Jack King can only be described as an inspiration to us all
A prisoner of war survivor and aspiring artist in his own right we have great respect for this humble gentleman. Jack was just 15 when WW2 broke out. Having joined the Royal Artillery, Jack was taken hostage in the Far East. He was forced to contribute to the construction of what became known as the ‘Death Railway’.
Amazingly, Jack lived through over three and a half years of torture. After returning to his hometown of Eastbourne, Jack met the love of his life Audrey, on a railway platform. A match made in heaven, the pair were married within a few months. And spent over 64 devoted years together. Their garden was their sanctuary where they spent precious time together as well as with friends and family.
Love Your Garden
Jack sadly lost his soul mate Audrey following a stroke. Although he found companionship in the charity Silverline, his precious garden that he shared with Audrey became increasingly difficult to maintain and his art studio began to fall apart. However, this was all to change thanks to Alan Titchmarsh and his team on ITV’s show Love Your Garden. Using nearby garden, Fairlight End in Sussex, for inspiration, Alan’s team set to work in transforming Jack’s garden. The aim was to create an enjoyable scene for Jack to relax and enjoy. But was also a practical and safe space.
Alan’s team created an art inspired garden including an even textured sandstone path using Global Stone Artisan Serenity paving which leads to brand new purpose-built art studio. The Artisan Serenity range adds a beautiful tone to this contemporary garden. It also serves a practical purpose with its even textured finish to reduce the risk of slipping in rainy or frosty weather.
Not only does Jacks garden transformation have a pathway leading him to indulge in his painting once more, he also has a lovely area to sit and reflect on his happy memories. Surrounded by a stunning selection of tropical themed planting, a pond oasis is framed by Global Stone York Green Pathway Setts.
At Global Stone, we were truly touched by Jacks moving story. We felt incredibly proud our paving was the natural choice for the garden created for such an inspirational person.
