The rhyme we all repeat yearly to remember which way the clocks go in March and October.
On the 28th March 2021 at 1 am, the clocks will ‘spring forward’ one hour, entering Daylight Saving Time (also known as British Summer Time). Though we won’t get that important lie in on Sunday, we will benefit from the sun staying with us for longer each day.
The concept of changing the clocks in Spring and Autumn started in the early 1900s by William Willett. The builder campaigned Daylight Saving Time in 1907 to allow the UK to take advantage of more daylight.
“Everyone appreciates the long light evenings. Everyone laments their shrinkage as the days grow shorter, and nearly everyone has given utterance to a regret that the clear bright light of early mornings, during Spring and Summer months, is so seldom seen or used.” – William Willett
During the First World War, parliament passed the policy in 1917, in order to save fuel and limit the use of candles and coal.
As we enter Daylight Saving Time in the UK, our attention turns to spending more time outside for those longer Spring and Summer days. There are plenty of benefits to Daylight Saving Time, including taking full advantage of your garden.
Firstly, it’s the perfect excuse to get out the barbecue. As gardens become increasingly an extension of the living space in homes, it only makes sense to have outdoor cooking facilities. Pizza ovens are becoming a trendsetter alongside the BBQ, with demand for outdoor kitchens increasing yearly.
Secondly, gardening has proven beneficial for improving physical and mental health, which is important in today’s society. Daylight Saving Time is perfect for spending long days and evenings garden, unconsciously working out both body and mind.
Finally, the Spring and Summer is the perfect time to consider making changes to your gardens’ landscape. Should you wish to re-landscape your garden, either by yourself or using a landscaper, both will have the benefit of starting earlier and finishing later to get the job done. The quicker a landscape takes to complete, the more time spent enjoying time outside! We recommend using the APL or BALI to find an accredited and reputable company to complete your project.
