Summer Solstice: Make the most of the sun in the garden

The 20th June 2020 marks the Summer Solstice and the first day of Summer.

The word Solstice combines two Latin phrases together; ‘Sol’ meaning Sun and ‘Sistere’ meaning to stand still. Therefore, the literal translation is ‘Sun standing still’. The Summer Solstice occurs when the sun is in its highest position over the Earth, giving us the longest day of the year. A Summer Solstice day in the UK typically lasts over 16 hours.

The Summer Solstice usually falls on the 21st June, but it can happen at any time between the 20th and 22nd.

Read on to explore ways to make the most of this celestial event in the garden.

The Sun & Paving

Depending on the orientation and layout of a garden, consider how the sun and the colour of paving work together. A garden with shaded areas would benefit from lighter paving such as creams, yellows or colours with plenty of buff blends to brighten the space. As the sun reflects off lighter colours, greys or darker colours would be easier on the eyes in a heavily sunlit garden with less shade. Alternatively, mix up both light and dark colours to create zones where the sun hits certain parts of a garden throughout the day. Need something to sit on? Sunlight & Growing Your Own

Sunlight is vital to sustaining the growth of vegetables. If there is an area in the garden that has more than six hours of sunlight, the Summer Solstice is a great time to start planning the layout of a vegetable garden and researching what to plant when.

During the Summer Solstice, use bright paving such as Porcelain Six Series Parchment to reflect the sun while growing your own edibles.

Outdoor Kitchen Space

For many people in the UK, they’ll most likely find this the perfect excuse to light the barbecue. Not a bad way to spend the Summer Solstice on a Saturday! The use of our paving doesn’t finish at creating a great looking patio. Use porcelain paving to create an outdoor kitchen, complete with a worktop or bar for preparing food and serving drinks. Porcelain paving does not absorb moisture, making it ideal for cleaning up any spillages. Therefore, porcelain paving allows more time to enjoy the day and less time concerned about how to get the stains out!
